Critical rule: hreflang must be reciprocal — if page A links to B, B must link back to A, otherwise Google drops the pair. Use 'x-default' for the fallback URL shown when no locale matches.

Hreflang rules that bite stores

  • • Use ISO 639-1 + ISO 3166-1 Alpha 2 (en-US, fr-FR, de-DE — never en-UK; correct code is en-GB)
  • • Every page must include itself in the hreflang set (self-referencing entry)
  • • Reciprocal — if /uk/ links to /us/, /us/ must link back to /uk/
  • • Canonical URL must be IN the hreflang set, not pointing outside it
  • • x-default points to the fallback (usually the language selector or default locale)
