When to use PPP localisation

PPP vs FX — what each is for

FX rates tell you what one dollar buys in foreign currency right now. PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) tells you what one dollar buys in foreign goods and services — which for ecommerce pricing is usually more relevant. A $30 product converted at FX to ₹2,500 in India looks expensive to local shoppers who see local equivalents at ₹1,000. PPP-adjusted pricing closes that gap.

When PPP works for ecommerce

  • Digital products and SaaS — universal. Spotify, Netflix, Notion all do it.
  • Service add-ons — extended warranties, support tiers, installation.
  • Physical goods — harder, because your COGS is the same regardless of where you sell. Hybrid: keep physical SKUs at flat USD; PPP-localise digital add-ons.
