How is social media engagement rate calculated? +
Engagement rate = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100. Some calculators use reach instead of followers in the denominator, that's "engagement rate by reach" and tends to look higher. By-followers is the industry-standard benchmark.
What's a good engagement rate by platform? +
Industry medians: Instagram 1-3%, TikTok 5-10%, LinkedIn 2-5%, Twitter/X 0.5-1%, Facebook 0.5-1.5%, YouTube 4-8%. Top 10% accounts roughly double these. Anything significantly below platform median suggests content isn't resonating with your existing followers.
Why is my engagement rate dropping as I gain followers? +
Two reasons: (1) algorithm distribution caps absolute reach so % of followers seeing posts drops, (2) larger audiences are less self-selected, gaining followers via virality dilutes the core engaged base. Engagement rate naturally drops 20-40% as accounts cross 100k followers.
Should I include saves and shares in engagement? +
Yes for Instagram and TikTok where saves and shares are first-class engagement signals (and weighted heavily by their algorithms). For Twitter/X and LinkedIn, the engagement equation is more like likes + comments + reposts/shares, saves don't apply on those platforms.
